GENERAL INFORMATION

20-21 % of the total 24 million population of Cameroon is Muslim. The country is a member of Central African Economic and Monetary Community with Gabon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo and Equatorial Guinea; and also a member of Central African Union, of which members are Democratic Republic of Congo and Angola in addition to the previously stated ones. In this respect, Cameroon shall not be considered alone and it shall be evaluated as placed in the heart of a geography which hosts 50 million Muslim people.

As a member of OIC, Cameroon actively participates in the works of SMIIC and takes place in the technical committees on Halal Food Issues (TC1), Halal Cosmetic Issues (TC2), Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (TC4), Tourism and Related Services (TC5), Agricultural Products (TC6), Leather and Tanning Material (TC8), Textiles and Related Products (TC9), Terminology (TC15) and SMIIC Committee on Standards for Conformity Assessment (SMIIC/CCA).

The unique competent authority in the country in the field of halal certification is Quality and Standardization Institution (Agence des Normes et de la Qualité – ANOR). The halal standard in force is “NC 33: 2001-20: Guidelines for the Use of the Term Halal” which entered into force in 2001. Studies on updating this standard and harmonization of other SMIIC standards are still continuing.

African Islamic Finance Consultancy is a civil society organization which works on both Islamic finance and halal certification. The core business of the institution is Islamic finance services. Moreover, a unit was established for meeting the needs with the consultancy of Halal Inspection Council which is located in Pakistan.
