GENERAL INFORMATION

Nigeria is the most populous country of the African continent with its nearly 205 million population, in which more than 100 million Muslims live that makes the country in the fifth place in Muslim-living countries. The country is a member of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) but not The Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries (SMIIC).

Despite the large Muslim population living in the country, there are not developed practices and official regulations on halal certification and halal certified products and services yet. However, it is known that demand for halal products is increasing in the country.

According to official data, the foreign trade of the country is very low in the sectors which are more generally subject to halal certification such as red meat and poultry meat.

Halal Certification Activities

The public authority in the country on standards is the Standards Organization of Nigeria (SON), and on food control is the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC). There are not any standards adopted by the SON in the field of halal certification yet. However, Halal Certification Authority (HCA), which is the most important institution that operates in the field of halal certification in the country, and Halal Compliance and Food Safety Limited (HaCFoS), which performs consultancy, training and product content analysis on halal, are known to have studies in cooperation with SON and NAFDAC. HCA has signed a memorandum of understanding with SON and NAFDAC. HCA, which started its halal certification activities in 2016, publishes on its website the relevant processes and the list of companies that are granted halal certificates.

Halal Events / Fairs

Until recently, no important halal activity has been organized in the country. The international halal training seminar organized by HCA in 2019 was the first in this field. However, for the first time in the country as an international halal fair, Halal Expo Nigeria 2020 was organized under the leadership of the Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI).
