GENERAL INFORMATION

The population of the Republic of South Africa is around 58.7 million and approximately 1.5% of the population consists of Muslims. Whith its developed halal ındustry, the Republic of South Africa considered to be one of the most advanced halal certification practices on the African continent. The country is among the top five halal product producing countries worldwide.
 
Halal products certified in the Republic of South Africa have penetrated into the markets of the other African countries by means of being a gateway for the African continent, hosting approximately 15% of the Muslim population in the world.
 
Poultry has a proportion of 72% in South African Republic's meat imports. 40.9% of this import is from Brazil, while 18.9% from the USA and 12.3% from Poland.
 
According to the estimates of the organizations that carry out halal certification activities in the country, the value of the halal industry in the country is about 3.22 billion USD. Due to the quality perception of the consumers regarding the halal-certified products, the non-Muslim population also has a serious interest in halal-certified products, and the range of products and companies with a halal certificate is quite wide.

Halal Certification Activities

The history of halal certification in the Republic of South Africa is very old. Halal certification, which started with meat products, spread over the food industry and fields such as medicine, cosmetics, and tourism and restaurant services over time. Most of the major slaughterhouses and dairy factories have halal certificates as a consequence of the importance given to halal certified products in the country. It is also known that feasibility studies have been carried out in the West Cape state of the Republic of South Africa, which wants to strengthen its position in the world halal market, to establish a free zone exclusive to the production and international trade of halal products.
