GENERAL INFORMATION
As of 2025, Jordan has 11 million inhabitants, of which approximately 90 percent are Muslims. The country has been a member of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) since 1969. It is also represented in the Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries by the Jordan Standards and Metrology Organization (JSMO). The country plays an active role in SMIIC and is a member of the SMIIC Board of Directors, Standardization Management Council and Accreditation Council. It is also a member of the Halal Food Issues (TC1), Halal Cosmetics Issues (TC2), Service Site Issues (TC3), Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (TC4), Tourism and Related Services (TC5), Leather and Tanning Material (TC8), Textiles and Related Products (TC9), Jewellry (TC13), Handicrafts (TC17) committees and the Committee on Standards for Conformity Assessment (SMIIC/CCA).
The country is also a member of the Islamic Forum for Halal Accreditation Bodies (IFHAB), an international body responsible for the functioning of the system for multilateral recognition of accredited halal certificates within the framework of OIC/SMIIC standards, and actively participates in the establishment process of this body. The country is a member of the IFHAB Executive Committee and the Mutual Recognition Agreement Committee established within IFHAB is chaired by Lana Marashdeh, Director of the Jordan Accreditation and Standardization System - Accreditation Unit (JAS-AU).
The Jordanian Ministry of Agriculture requires all slaughterhouses exporting meat and poultry products to Jordan for the first time to register. The following documents are required for these products:
- Slaughterhouse license, Registration code, Quality assurance certificate, International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 22000 or Hazard Analysis and Critical Points (HACCP) and halal slaughter certificate.
