As of the end of 2019, Uzbekistan became a member of the Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries (SMIIC). At SMIIC, it is represented by the Metrology, Standardization and Certification Authority (UZSTANDARD). Uzbekistan takes part in the technical committees of Halal Food (TC 1), Service Spaces (TC3), Tourism and Related Services (TC 5), Agricultural Products (TC 6), Textiles and Related Products (TC 9), Halal Management Systems (TC 11) and Terminology (TC 15).

Muslims are the majority by the 93% of 31.5 million Uzbek population, Christians follows Muslims with 7% of the population. Although halal certification is not mandatory, it is stated that halal certification is welcomed by Uzbek people especially in food products. Halal certificates issued in the country of origin, in other words exporting country, are accepted in Uzbekistan and there is no additional requirement for import. Germany, Hungary and Ukraine are the leading exporters to Uzbekistan on halal certified animal products.

The growing economy, the developing middle class and export-oriented manufacturing are the main driving forces of the increasing demand in halal certificates.

Halal Certification Activities

Uzbekistan adopted the OIC/SMIIC 1:2019 standard as the national standard. Moreover, a certification body based in the Netherlands opened a branch in the Namangan Region of Uzbekistan in July 2019.
