GENERAL INFORMATION

The population of Germany is about 83 million and 6% of the population (about 5 million) is Muslim. Recently, this figure has been increasing rapidly with refugees and legal immigrants from Muslim countries. Muslims are the largest immigrant group in Germany with Turks being the biggest community.

The size of the halal market in Germany is estimated to be around 5 billion Euros. Despite regulatory restrictions differing from state to state regarding Halal and Kosher slaughtering, meat and meat products are the largest product category in the halal market. These products are mostly offered on the basis of on their own statements in the businesses of Turkish community or other Muslim communities.

Halal Certification Activities

In a study conducted in 2010, it was seen that more than 400 enterprises in Germany have offered halal products to the market. Due to the fact that the Turkish population in the country generally operate in the food products retail sector and that Turkish consumers prefer these businesses due to their trust on them, there has not been a necessity for halal certified products and an institutional halal certification service for many years. However, with the approaches in other European countries and the increased awareness of halal in the Muslim population, halal certification has become a booming market.

Although halal certification is not mandatory in Germany, there are some certification bodies operating in the sectors such as food, cosmetics, personal care products and pharmaceuticals. Some of the halal certification bodies in Germany are listed below:

Halal Quality Control (HQC)
Halal Correct Gmbh[1]
Halal Control (HC)
Halal Certification Services (HCS)
Halal Europe ohg
European Institute of Halal Certifcation Institute (EHZ)
M-Haditec GmbH
Halal-Zertifizierung des “Islamischen Zentrum Aachen (Bilal-Moschee) e.V”
Islamic Chamber Research and Information Center (ICRIC)
Halal Certification Germany (HCG)
Islamic Council of Mannheim Institute
Şimşek Food Quality Systems
ECT GmbH - Engineering Consulting

There is no common halal certification standard in Germany, and no common halal certification program is implemented. There are 27 different halal marks on the market. These marks deliberately use the crescent, green color, Arabic letters, motifs that evoke Islam, and the phrase “100% halal”. However, these signs are not related to any official or Islamic authority, and some of the designs are created by manufacturers or service providers. In this regard, the reliability of these documents issued by halal certification bodies has become questionable by consumers.

Halal Exhibitions
Halal products are exhibited under the title “Anuga Halal Market” at the international Anuga Food Fair, held once a year in Cologne, Germany. Halal products are exhibited in this fair within the title of “Anuga Halal Market”. Furthermore, a new expo was planned to be organized with the name of “Halal Hannover 2020”, but it has been delayed due to the global COVID-19 outbreak.
