According to the latest research by the Dutch Statistics Center (CBS), approximately 5% of the Dutch population consists of Muslims. This corresponds to almost one million Muslims when the Dutch population is taken into account. The majority of Muslims in the Netherlands are of Turkish and Moroccan origin. Today, there are more than 500 mosque associations founded by Muslims throughout the Netherlands. The halal market in the Netherlands has an important position in line with the needs of the country's Muslim population and the increasing demand for halal products.
Although there are no specific legal regulations for halal products in the Netherlands, halal certification processes are generally carried out in accordance with international standards and criteria determined by Islamic countries.
There is no central Islamic religious authority in the Netherlands. Instead, there are various Islamic organizations and mosque associations belonging to different ethnic and sectarian groups. These organizations provide religious services to their congregations and provide guidance on issues such as halal certification. In particular, organizations such as the CMO (Contactorgaan Moslims en Overheid), which was established to facilitate communication between Muslims and the state in the Netherlands, play an important role in representing the Muslim community. The Liaison Body for Muslims and Government (CMO) is a partnership of over 380 mosques and 10 mosque umbrella organizations that represent the interests of Muslims in Dutch government and politics.
Halal Market
As of 2015, the Dutch halal market was estimated to be worth €2.78 billion ($2.94 billion). The halal market in the Netherlands has experienced significant growth in recent years. In 2022, the market was valued at approximately $4.7 billion and is projected to reach $8.1 billion by 2032, indicating a compound annual growth rate of around 5.5%.
In terms of trade, the Netherlands is a notable exporter of halal meat. In 2019, the country exported approximately $590 million worth of halal meat, ranking among the top ten global exporters in this sector.
