GENERAL INFORMATION
Unlike its neighbor New Zealand, Australia is a country where a lot of Muslim immigrants live. It is estimated that slightly more than 2% of the 25.5 million people living in the country are Muslims. The majority of Muslim immigrants over the past 40 years are from countries such as Lebanon, Turkey, Pakistan, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Fiji and Albania.
Halal Certification Activities
Australia, a major agricultural country, has been exporting carcasses and live animals to more than 40 Muslim-majority countries, including Egypt, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Saudi Arabia since the 1970s.
To increase exports to Muslim countries, Australia has developed a central halal policy based on the government's dual control and Islamic halal slaughtering principle. In 1983, the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Services Authority (AQIS) has been assigned to authorize organizations that carry out halal certification.
In 2009, the Australian Government Supervised Islamic Slaughter Program (AGSMS) and the Australian Government Authorized Halal Program (AGAHP) were initiated. The programs are implemented only for meat products to be exported under the Meat Orders-Export Control Law (1982).
