GENERAL INFORMATION

Argentina's population is 45 million, of which approximately 1.5% to 3% are Muslim. Argentina is among the largest economies in South America with its natural resources, an export oriented agricultural sector and its diversified industrial production. Argentina, an important agricultural product exporter, is an important red meat supplier especially to the Middle East and Southeast Asian countries. In addition, government programs have been developed in recent years for SMEs to open up to foreign markets in order to expand their shares from exports.

In this context, to increase the exports of food products to the Arab markets, halal certification activities are supported by the state. As part of this support activity, the Argentine Accreditation Agency (OAA) has been included to the United Arab Emirates-based International Halal Accreditation Forum (IHAF). Together with the Argentine Investment and International Trade Agency, the Ministry of Agriculture and Production organizes training activities to increase competitiveness for SMEs, such as "The Opportunity to Increase Food Export in Argentina - Halal Accreditation" training program.

Halal Certification Activities

The Entrepreneurs Secretariat of the Ministry of National Manufacturing also provides certification consultancy services and partial compensation of halal certification costs of SMEs. Similarly, the Argentina Investment and International Trade Agency has launched a new export documentation program so that companies operating in the food industry can market their products abroad.

In addition to the Islamic Center of the Republic of Argentina (Centro Islámico de La Republica Argentina - CIRA), which is also recognized by the state as the representative of the Islamic religion, the Spanish-based “Halal Food Quality” certification body is also active.

Besides the ESMA approach, CIRA also provides certification in accordance with the halal standards of the Singapore Ulema Assembly (MUIS), which is the competent authority in halal in Singapore, and the Ministry of Religious Development of Malaysia (JAKIM).

As a result of the studies carried out by the Argentine Food Safety and Quality Authority (SENESA) and the Singapore Ulema Assembly (MUIS) between 2016 and 2018, exports of halal poultry products to Singapore have gained momentum.[1]
