GENERAL INFORMATION
Brazil is the second most populous country in the Americas after the USA with its population over 211 million. According to the official figures, the Muslim population is around 40 thousand in the country. The Muslim population mostly compose of Lebanese and Syrian immigrants who still have commercial relations with their homeland.
Brazil has an advanced halal certification structure, especially due to the importance of the country in supplying poultry and red meat to the Gulf countries. With its halal-certified poultry meat approaching USD 2.5 billion, Brazil is one of the leading players in the industry. Half of the country's poultry exports are halal certified products.[1] Apart from poultry meat, exports of halal certified products consisting of red meat, eggs, honey and cheese have reached US $5 billion.[2]
In 2019, Saudi Arabia, an important market for Brazil, released a technical regulation that excludes electrically stunned poultry from halal certification. Efforts to adjust according to the new Saudi import requirements adversely affected daily slaughter capacity of the poultry facilities. In addition, Muslim employees were hired especially from the Southeast Asian countries.[3]
