GENERAL INFORMATION

About 3.2% of Canada's 37.6 million inhabitants are Muslim. The fact that the North American region (USA and Canada) attracts a significant number of Muslim immigrants makes this country an important market for halal products. Halal products also attract the non-Muslim population due to the demand for clean, trustable and hygienic products.

Canada's current halal food and beverage market value is over $1 billion. With a high annual growth rate of 13%, this market is expected to reach a size of $2.6 billion in a short time. The value of the Canadian halal meat market is estimated to be $214 million.

Despite increasing access to halal food in Canada, a 2014 survey conveyed that approximately 65 percent of halal food consumers felt food companies and the leading food chains were insufficient in meeting their halal demands. This is an indication that the Canadian market is open to development in the field of halal food.

A considerable portion of halal certified products are offered to consumers by small businesses operated by immigrants of Middle East and Southeast Asia origin.

Halal Certification Activities

Since 2016, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency has requested the halal labeled products to be certified from a halal certification body. With this application, if the product is claimed to be halal in its label, package or advertisement, it is obligatory to include the full name of the certification body in these areas.

Halal Events / Fairs

Halal Expo Canada, which is organized annually in Canada with a halal theme, is planned to be held in Toronto between June 3-5, 2021.
