Developing Eight (D-8) Organization for Economic Cooperation

The members of the Developing Eight (D-8) Organization for Economic Cooperation, which officially established by the Summit of Heads of State/Government in Istanbul on 15 June 1997, are Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Indonesia, Egypt and Nigeria.

These eight countries, all of which are also members of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), established the organization with the aim of enhancing the economic and commercial cooperation among the member countries and with the objectives of improving developing countries’ position in the world economy, diversifying their commercial relations and creating new opportunities for member countries in trade, enhancing participation in decision-making mechanisms at international level and providing better standards of living.

According to the decision taken in the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on 10 December 2014, D-8 Organization has observer status in the UNGA.

The six main principles of the organization are; peace instead of conflict, dialogue instead of confrontation, cooperation instead of exploitation, justice instead of double-standard, equality instead of discrimination, and democracy instead of oppression.

The principal organs of D-8 are the Summit, the Council, and the Commission.

The Summit is composed of the Heads of State/Government of member states and is convened once every two years.

The Council is composed of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of member states and is the political decision-making organ of D-8.

The Commission is the executive body of D-8 which is composed of senior officials appointed by their respective governments.

In addition, D-8 Secretariat has been established to provide the necessary coordination in the activities of the organization and the General Secretariat is in Istanbul. As of Mayıs 2021, Ambassador Dato’ Ku Jaafar Ku Shaari from Malaysia serves as the Secretary General.

The main working areas of D-8 are agriculture and food security, trade, transportation, industrial cooperation, energy and minerals, tourism, and health.

Supporting the efforts of harmonization of the halal standards among the member states in order to the recognition of the halal certified products between parties is one of the priorities of the organization in agriculture and food security field.
