GENERAL INFORMATION 
Pakistan is a member of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries (SMIIC). Pakistan holds the Vice Chairman chair of the SMIIC Standardization Board and is a member of the SMIIC Accreditation Council. Also takes part in the technical committees of Halal Food (TC1), Halal Cosmetics (TC2), Tourism and Related Services (TC5), Agricultural Products (TC6), Leather and Tanning (TC8), Textile and Related Products (TC9), Halal Supply Chain (TC10), Halal Management Systems (TC11), Petroleum and Related Products (TC14), Terminology (TC15), Halal Pharmacy Products (TC16) and Conformity Assessment Standards Committee (SMIIC/CCA). 
Pakistan is the country with the highest number of Muslims after Indonesia. 203 million (96%) of the total population of 212 million are Muslims. The sensitivity for halal products is very high in the society. However, awareness on halal-certified and halal-marked products is low, and in general, and the products produced in Pakistan are considered as halal.Halal Certification Activities
Halal Certification Activities
Halal certification is not mandatory in domestic production. A document is requested at the customs to state that food products imported from abroad do not contain haram content. Additional documents other than halal certificate may also be required for imports.
In the country, private sector institutions and some state administration institutions issue halal certification. Pakistan National Accreditation Council (PNAC) is the country's national accreditation authority and accredits halal certification bodies. The country currently has seven halal conformity assessment bodies accredited by PNAC. [1]

Detailed information on the activities, duties and responsibilities of the Pakistan Halal Authority, which is included in the law enacted in 2016 in order to ensure coordination in the subjects of halal accreditation, promotion of halal products and raising halal awareness, can be accessed on the website of the Authority (http://www.pakistanhalalauthority.org.pk/Default.aspx).
 
Halal certificates issued by SMIIC member country organizations are accepted in Pakistan. In addition, halal certificates issued in exporting countries are accepted within the framework of multilateral and bilateral agreements that Pakistan is a party to.
 
During President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's official visit to Pakistan, Turkish Minister of Trade Mrs. Ruhsar Pekcan and Pakistani Minister of Industry and Technology Mr. Chaudhry Fawad Hussain signed a Memorandum of Understanding, covering issues such as training and expert exchange  between Halal Accreditation Agency (HAK) and the Pakistan National Accreditation Council (PNAC) on February 14, 2020,  in order to develop cooperation between Pakistan and Turkey in the field of halal accreditation.

  • World Halal Assembly
“International Halal Conference and Expo” (http://halalconference.org/), which is organized for the seventh time in 2019, stands out as an event where stakeholders in this sector come together in the country. The main objective of this international conference which was held through the Halal Research Council (HRC) platform is raising awareness on halal standards and concepts and emphasizing the importance of halal consumption.
 
In addition, the World Halal Assembly was held in Islamabad in 2014 by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) (with the support of the Pakistan Halal Association and the Halal Development Council (http://www.halalpakistan.com) with the participation of more than 250 academics from 40 countries. At the event, which was held simultaneously with SMIIC's 8. Board of Directors and 6. General Assembly meeting, various cooperation agreements were also signed between Pakistani companies and standard organizations for the export of Pakistani halal products.
